DSP For Saint Petersburg
September 15, 2004

The 2004 Deutscher Spiele Preis has been awarded to Saint Petersburg from Hans im Glück and "Michael Tummelhofer." The prize is voted on by game players throughout Germany and, thanks to Internet ballots, throughout the world. The top ten finishers were:

1. Saint Petersburg
2. San Juan
3. Goa
4. Attika
5. Einfach Genial
6. Ticket to Ride
7. Maharaja
8. Finstere Flure
9. Hansa
10. The Bridges of Shangri-La

2004 Spiel des Jahres Winner
June 28, 2004

Ticket to Ride has been named this year's Spiel des Jahres winner, once again bringing the jury in line with the general consensus of the gaming community. Congratulations to Days of Wonder for their first win-- all the more impressive considering how young the company is-- and to Alan Moon for his second SdJ prize (the first being Elfenland in 1998).

2004 Spiel des Jahres Nominees
May 22, 2004

Dicke Luft in der Gruft: Norbert Proena (Zoch)
Einfach Genial: Reiner Knizia (Kosmos)
Raja: Michael Kiesling & Wolfgang Kramer (Phalanx)
St. Petersburg: Michael Tummelhofer (Hans im Glück)
Zug um Zug (Ticket to Ride): Alan R. Moon (Days of Wonder)

Ticket to Ride and St. Petersburg seem like the best choices to me-- both are light while not without substance, easy to teach and play. Einfach Genial also has its fans, and it's been quite a while since a pure abstract game has won the prize and Knizia, of course, has never nabbed it. Raja is the heaviest of the pack and therefore seems the dark horse candidate.

5. Lowenherz by Klaus Teuber (Kosmos)
6. Fische Fluppen Frikadellen by F. Friese (2F-Spiele)
7. Mare Nostrum by Serge Laget (Eurogames)
8. New England by A. R. Moon and A. Weissblum (Goldsieber)

Congratulations to Herr Knizia!

And the Winner Is...
June 23, 2003

Congratulations to Dirk Henn and Queen, whose game Alhambra has won this year's Spiel des Jahres. Alhambra is a redesign of Henn's earlier Stimmt So!, with some minor rules changes and the addition of a tile-laying component.

International Gamers Award Announced

In the biggest surprise since Dom Deluise decided, "Just one more doughnut," this year's International Gamers Award (formerly the Gamers Choice Award) went to Puerto Rico. The world may now continue spinning on its axis.

The Gamers' Choice Awards have severed their ties to the Strategy Gaming Society, gone independent, added some new members to the committee, and renamed themselves as the International Gamers Awards. Full details can be found at their new website.

Annual Joke Announced
March 24, 2003

The absurd categorizations that are the Origins Awards nominations were announced at the recent GAMA trade show in Las Vegas. Highlights this year include Puerto Rico in the "Best Science Fiction or Fantasy Board Game" category (bet you didn't realize all those "colonists" aren't human) but not the Game of the Year category, and both Squint and Entdecker in the "Best Abstract Board Game" category. Maybe someday the academy will realize their categories don't make much sense, but in the meantime it's always good for an annual chuckle. The complete list of nominees can be found here at Game Table Online.
